Academic calendar
A calendar of important dates at Sheridan.
Advanced standing
Credit gained from a unit or units from previous studies, deemed equivalent to your course of study at Sheridan. Also know as credit transfer or recognition of prior learning.
Bachelor
At least three-years (full-time or equivalent part-time) undergraduate qualification which meets the requirement for AQF Level 7.
Concentration
A series of units which satisfies the requirements for a specialisation within a Sheridan postgraduate coursework degree.
Core unit
A compulsory unit, as required by your course.
At Sheridan, there are three types of core units:
- core units specific to your course
- core research units
- core Christian Studies units (taken by students across all undergraduate courses)
Course
A program of study leading to a higher education qualification, for example, Bachelor of Business.
Course workload
If you are a full-time student, (i.e. 12 credit points in a semester), you should plan for 12 hours a week to attend your classes and a total of 28-30 hours a week for personal study.
A standard unit typically represents 150 hours of study over a semester, including class contact hours and private study. These 150 hours typically consist of seminars or lectures for 36 hours (3 hours per week per unit over 12 teaching weeks) and personal study for 114 hours (7 hours per week per unit over 12 teaching weeks plus 10 hours per unit per week over 3 non-teaching weeks).
Credit points
A measure of your study load. Each unit/subject is usually worth 3 credit points.
Credit transfer
Recognition of prior learning of a unit or units, deemed equivalent to your course of study at Sheridan. Also known as advanced standing.
Diploma
A one-year (full-time or equivalent part-time) undergraduate qualification which meets the requirements for AQF Level 5.
Domestic students
You are considered a domestic student for fee purposes if you are:
- an Australian citizen (including dual citizens)
- an Australian permanent resident (all categories including humanitarian visas)
- a New Zealand citizen
- a spouse of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or New Zealand citizen (must be able to provide evidence of a current spousal visa)
- a child of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or New Zealand citizen (must be able to provide evidence)
Elective units
A unit that may be selected from any School or discipline, as long as prerequisites are met.
Full-time study
Enrolled in 12 credit points (usually 4 units) in a semester.
International students on a student visa in Australia must be enrolled full-time each semester.
Graduate Diploma
A one-year (full-time or equivalent part-time) postgraduate qualification which meets the requirements for AQF Level 8.
Higher Education
Studying at this level involves a demonstration of critical thinking skills. Higher education transcripts have a list of units, accompanied by marks or grades such as High Distinction (HD), Distinction (D), Credit (C), Pass (P) or Fail (F).
International Students
You are considered an international student for fee purposes if you are:
- a resident or citizen of any other country
- a temporary resident (including but not limited to student visas, bridging visas etc)
- a permanent resident of New Zealand
- a dependent of an individual holding a temporary visa
Major
A series of eight (8) or more units which formally satisfies the requirements for a specialisation within a Sheridan Bachelor degree.
Minor
A series of four (4) units which informally demonstrates extended studies in a specialisation within a Sheridan Bachelor degree.
Part-time study
Enrolled in 6 credit points or less (usually one to two units) in a semester.
Postgraduate
Further study after having earned a Bachelor or other first degree (AQF Level 8 and above). In postgraduate degrees, students will obtain specialised knowledge and are required to demonstrate a higher level of independence and critical thinking in their studies.
Semester
A study period of 15 weeks. There are two semesters in one calendar year.
Undergraduate
All higher education courses up to and including the level of a Bachelor degree (AQF Level 7). In undergraduate degrees, students are introduced to the essential body of knowledge for a specific academic discipline.
Unit
A single subject within a higher education course.
Each unit has a unit code and title, for example, MK101 Principles of Marketing.
Vocational Education
Studying at this level focuses on the demonstration of your practical skills. Vocational education transcripts have a list of modules, accompanied by the signifiers Competent (CO) or Not Yet Competent (NYC).
