About the Conference
The biennial Indian Ocean Studies Conference provides an important venue for researchers, scholars, policy-makers, students and the general public to meet and share their thoughts and ideas on this significant region. The conferences have facilitated presentations and discussions focussing on the sub-themes: maritime history and trade, education and communities, faith and culture, disease and disease control, environmental studies and defence and strategic studies. Scholars with a research interest in these topics presented at the conference, and the recent edited book (2022) published by Lexington Books was developed from the findings of the 2021 conference.
These biennial conferences have been organised collaboratively by staff in the School of Humanities and Social Science at Sheridan Institute of Higher Education and scholars from the WA Maritime Museum and the Australian Association for Maritime History.
The next conference will be in Perth, Western Australian in 2023. We welcome scholars who are engaged in the field of Indian Ocean Studies - broadly defined - to express their interest (details forthcoming).
