Mayra, Bachelor of Business (Accounting)

Hello! My name is Mayra Mideros, originally from Ecuador. In November 2023, I completed my Bachelor in Business with a major in Accounting from Sheridan Institute of Higher Education.

My time at Sheridan was an immensely rewarding experience for me. My intellectual and personal development was greatly enhanced by the curriculum's diversity, the school's supportive environment and its knowledgeable and approachable teachers.  The focus on practical skills and business knowledge, particularly in sections pertaining to accounting and research, adequately equipped me for the challenges that I have faced throughout my professional experience.

Sheridan gave me a good foundation in accounting theory as well as practical experience. This experience, along with the institution's reputation, gave me a competitive edge in the job market and led to several job opportunities. However, I was working as a waiter and support worker at the time and I didn't know how the Australian job market operated or how to look for a professional job.

During the middle of my studies, I made a conscious effort to explore options that would help me achieve my career goals, which included finding entry-level accounting employment or internships. I was able to become a mentee of the Kaleidoscope Mentoring Program Cycle 1 2022 through networking and involvement in programs, such as the Kaleidoscope Mentoring Programme. I learned how to customise my résumé for the Australian job market, practice interviews, and was assigned a mentor who greatly assisted me in my professional job search.

Following that, I was able to compete in the job market, received multiple interview invitations, and eventually secured the position of Administrative and Financial Assistant at the WA Labor Party's office.

During a typical workday, I oversee administrative duties, manage financial transactions, reconcile several bank accounts, process donations, handle accounts payable, and generally assist the finance team. One of the biggest lessons I took away from my time in school was the value of ongoing education as well as honesty and belief. In addition, I learned a lot about professionalism, problem-solving techniques, and time management.

I would advise prospective students to put in a lot of study time and ensure that they fully understand accounting and business concepts. Afterwards, they should search for jobs by utilising internship and work experience opportunities.

If you're from abroad, familiarise yourself with the Australian job market. You can also expand your horizons and improve your chances by networking and participating in extracurricular activities. Finally, remember the strength of confidence and faith in God, knowing that He is with you on your road of determination and courage in accomplishing your goals.
