Biography

In his work as a conservation ecologist, Jason has known the thrill of discovering and describing many new species. One he did not stumble upon was named after him! He also speaks some Japanese which has been an advantage on his many trips to Asia. Holding a PhD in Conservation Biology, he has contributed internationally through research and consultation. Although Jason began at Sheridan as a lecturer in the Faculty of Mathematics, Physical Science, and Life Sciences, he shifted his priority towards the needs of one species in particular: Homo sapiens. Despite scientific progress and achievement, he came to realise that human beings are essentially broken people carrying various degrees of pain. This spurred him on to make a career change. After completing a Master of Divinity, together with a more practical Certificate in Ministry, Jason now encourages everyone to consider issues of spirituality. On campus, he teaches units on Christianity and heads up informal, small-group discussions – adding an expert layer of pastoral care. Off campus, he is involved in a church plant and reaching out to the homeless.

Biography

Maya has a multi-national, multi-lingual, and multi-disciplinary background. She was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina (ex-Yugoslavia) and completed her early education in Servo-Croatian. When the civil war broke out, she moved to Belgium and continued her studies in Flemish. The recipient of a national scholarship, she graduated with both a Bachelor of Chemistry and Master of Biochemistry from the University of Antwerp. She migrated to Australia in 1999 and began a career as a Medical Researcher at the Cancer Research Unit (University of Newcastle). In this role, Maya saw the potential of Information Technologies to advance studies of human diseases and got inspired to undertake a PhD (at Curtin University) related to this field. As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Curtin, she worked on various research projects until 2012. Bethanie (a not-for-profit aged care provider) recruited her to work on a national health project which she did from 2012 to 2014, before joining the team at Sheridan. On campus, she has worked on governance, course development, an artificial photosynthesis research project, and lectures on Information Technology.

Biography

Jerome is a trained human geographer whose research explores the interface between extractive industries and sustainable community development drawing from political ecology approaches.

“Achieving equity in sustainable development means that the benefits and burdens of development, including the exploitation of natural resources, are widely accessible and distributed fairly across different facets of society. The task of the human geographer in building a socially just society includes highlighting social inequities and proffering sustainable solutions”.

Jerome’s research thus examines vulnerability, marginalisation and socioeconomic transformations of rural mining communities through the exploitation and use of high-value natural resources.

Jerome has over 5 years of research experience in the extractive industries as a social performance and community engagement specialist. He has been teaching in the area of human geography for several years and is open to consultancy work and supervision of students.

Jerome obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography (First Class Honours) from the University of Ghana. He holds a Master of Science degree in Natural Resources Management from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Norway) and a PhD from the University of Adelaide (Australia). Prior to joining Sheridan, he worked in different roles with a number of organisations including The Legatus Group, Independent Social Performance, University of Ghana and University of Adelaide among others.

Jerome has published in international peer-reviewed journals such as Extractive Industries and Society, Social Justice Research and Society and Natural Resources. As a member of the Institute of Australian Geographers (IAG), Jerome has presented papers and organised conference sessions at the institute’s annual conferences.
