Biography

Although he doesn’t consider himself a linguist, Joshua probably speaks the greatest number of languages on campus. He has always been curious about linguistic and cultural differences, having lived in the Middle East as well as South and East Asia. He studied Hebrew in Israel, and then French and English at Edith Cowan University in Perth. Later, he completed a PhD in Asian Studies at the University of Western Australia, with a focus on Chinese Studies. After doctoral studies, he taught in South Korea at Woosong University, before returning to join the faculty at Sheridan. Currently learning Sanskrit and Tibetan, Joshua brings a wealth of experience to a multitude of HASS units covering history, sociology, religion, and Chinese. His particular area of expertise is the spread and influence of Tibetan Buddhism in Chinese societies – the theme of his recent book. Joshua also organises Sheridan’s biennial Indian Ocean Studies Conference, actively promoting research into these respective languages and religions.

Biography

Miriam is intrigued by creative expression, particularly those of hybrid identities that include the dimension of faith. She graduated from some of Australia’s sandstone universities (UWA then UQ) doing her BA, MA, and PhD. Her first poetry collection won the Western Australian Premier’s Prize and, since then, her work has appeared in numerous anthologies and journals (both print and online). She is also the author of a children’s book: Bree’s Forest Adventure. A keen practitioner, Miriam regularly attends readings (usually at Voicebox in Fremantle) and participates in local Perth writers’ festivals. Incredibly excited by the publishing and networking possibilities that exist in the expanding digital universe, she leads a community creative writing hub: facilitating feedback and watching other writers learn and grow. On-campus, she pours 19 years of industry experience into her Creative Writing lectures and workshops. Her research interests include Asian-Australian and Asian diaspora cultural production as well as the feedback process in creative writing pedagogy.

Biography

Ali started work as a primary-school teacher in an isolated, iron ore mining town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. She changed direction, four years later, by undertaking a Bachelor of Theology. This launched her into a new career as an overseas missionary. In both the Philippines and northern Mongolia, she studied the local language, helped plant churches, wrote curriculum material, and taught English from Beginner to Advanced levels. She expanded her love of language by completing a Master of Applied Linguistics at Curtin University in 2003.

After more than 20 years of working abroad, Ali returned to Perth in 2013. She taught all levels of English at Stacey College for three years and then joined the HASS faculty at Sheridan. On campus, Ali delivers the first-year research unit, lectures in Linguistics, and provides Academic English support for staff and students alike. Her passion is translanguaging. She is still part of an international editing team who work on language documents for south-east Asia.

Biography

Jerome is a trained human geographer whose research explores the interface between extractive industries and sustainable community development drawing from political ecology approaches.

“Achieving equity in sustainable development means that the benefits and burdens of development, including the exploitation of natural resources, are widely accessible and distributed fairly across different facets of society. The task of the human geographer in building a socially just society includes highlighting social inequities and proffering sustainable solutions”.

Jerome’s research thus examines vulnerability, marginalisation and socioeconomic transformations of rural mining communities through the exploitation and use of high-value natural resources.

Jerome has over 5 years of research experience in the extractive industries as a social performance and community engagement specialist. He has been teaching in the area of human geography for several years and is open to consultancy work and supervision of students.

Jerome obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography (First Class Honours) from the University of Ghana. He holds a Master of Science degree in Natural Resources Management from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Norway) and a PhD from the University of Adelaide (Australia). Prior to joining Sheridan, he worked in different roles with a number of organisations including The Legatus Group, Independent Social Performance, University of Ghana and University of Adelaide among others.

Jerome has published in international peer-reviewed journals such as Extractive Industries and Society, Social Justice Research and Society and Natural Resources. As a member of the Institute of Australian Geographers (IAG), Jerome has presented papers and organised conference sessions at the institute’s annual conferences.
